Iligan City to host world boxing championship

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines – This capital of Lanao del Norte will host a world boxing championship on September 25 at the SU-IIT gym as one of the highlights of its month-long fiesta, Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz said Friday morning.

The main event of “Bakbakan sa Iligan” will be a 12-round defense by World Boxing Council mini-flyweight champion Denver “The Excitement” Cuello of Iloilo against Mohamad “The Rock” Rachman of Jakarta, Indonesia, who once held the title in the International Boxing Federation in the main event of Aljoe Ortiz Jaro, manager of Jaro International Promotions, said.

Cruz, who said this is the first time Iligan will host a major boxing event, assured full security not only for “Bakbakan” but the whole duration of Diyandi (Higanonon for “summit”) festival. (RV Umel)
